If you're walking in darkness tonight, this verse is for you.

Christ didn't come to a world that had it all together. He came to darkness—political oppression, poverty, violence, suffering. He came to a people who had been waiting centuries for hope.

He came to darkness, and He became the Light.

And here's the beautiful, scandalous truth of Christmas:

God didn't wait for us to clean up our mess before showing up. He didn't wait for us to get it together. He didn't wait for us to be 'good enough.'

He came TO the darkness. He came FOR those in darkness. He came AS light for those who couldn't find their way.
So if you're struggling with depression tonight... If anxiety is stealing your peace tonight... If grief is heavy tonight... If trauma makes this season complicated tonight... If you feel more darkness than light tonight...

Emmanuel. God with us.

Not God with us when we're better. Not God with us if we try harder.

God WITH us. Right here. Right now. In the darkness.

The Light of the World wasn't born in a palace. He was born in a stable—a dark, messy, unexpected place.

Which means there's no darkness He won't enter. No mess He won't meet you in. No struggle He won't walk through with you.

Whatever darkness you're carrying tonight, you're not carrying it alone.
The Light has come. The Light is here. The Light is WITH you.

If Christmas is hard for you, you're not alone.

Maybe it's hard because of grief—empty chairs at the table. Maybe it's hard because of family conflict—people you have to see who hurt you. Maybe it's hard because of financial stress—watching everyone else spend freely. Maybe it's hard because of loneliness—feeling disconnected even in crowds. Maybe it's hard because your mental health is struggling—and everyone expects you to be joyful.
If you're dreading tomorrow instead of anticipating it, I see you.

And I want to give you permission for a few things:
✨ You can set boundaries, even on Christmas. It's okay to leave early. It's okay to say no. It's okay to protect your peace.
✨ You can feel your feelings. Sadness on Christmas is valid. Anxiety on Christmas is real. Not feeling festive is okay.
✨ You can simplify. You don't have to do all the things. Pick what matters most and release the rest.
✨ You can rest. Christmas doesn't require your performance. You can just... be.
✨ You can ask for help. If you're struggling, reach out. Call a friend. Text a crisis line. You don't have to white-knuckle through this alone.
✨ You can acknowledge that this is hard. You're not a Grinch. You're not ungrateful. You're human navigating a complicated season.

The pressure to have a 'perfect' Christmas is crushing—especially when you're already struggling.

So let me be clear: There's no such thing as a perfect Christmas. There's only real Christmas. And real Christmas makes space for struggle.

Emmanuel means 'God with us.'

God with us in the joy AND the grief. God with us in celebration AND struggle. God with us on good days AND hard days.

He's with you tomorrow, whatever tomorrow holds.

You're going to make it through. One moment at a time. And that's enough.

Today is the winter solstice—the longest night of

Today is the winter solstice—the longest night of the year.

But here's what makes this night sacred:
Starting tomorrow, the light begins to return.
Slowly. Imperceptibly at first. But surely.

Every day from now until summer, the darkness gets shorter. The light gets longer. It's a cosmic promise that no night lasts forever.

If you've been in a long season of darkness—depression that won't lift, grief that won't ease, pain that won't stop—I need you to hear this:

Even the longest night ends. Even the deepest darkness eventually gives way to light. Even when you can't see it yet, the light is already turning back toward you.
This isn't toxic positivity. Some nights are brutally long. Some darkness feels suffocating. Some pain is real and deep and valid.

But darkness doesn't have the final word.

'The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.' — John 1:5

Whatever darkness you're walking through right now, it won't last forever.

Not because I'm minimizing your pain. But because that's how light works. That's how hope works. That's how God works.

The light always returns.

Maybe today you can't see it yet. Maybe you're still in the longest, darkest part of your night.

But hold on. Keep breathing. Keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Because starting tomorrow—literally and metaphorically—the light begins its journey back.

And one day, you'll wake up and realize: the darkness didn't win.
You're still here. And that matters more than you know.

When I'm in deep depression, this verse feels impossible and comforting at the same time.

Impossible because I FEEL the darkness. It's heavy, suffocating, all-consuming.
Comforting because it reminds me: Even though I can't see in this darkness, God can. Even though I feel lost, He knows exactly where I am.

The darkness that blinds me doesn't blind Him.

This verse doesn't minimize the darkness—it's not saying 'it's not really that bad.' It's acknowledging the darkness IS dark. Night IS night.

But to God? Light and darkness are the same.

Which means: • Your darkest depression doesn't separate you from God • Your deepest anxiety doesn't hide you from His sight • Your most confused moments don't confuse Him • Your worst days don't change His love for you
He sees you. He knows where you are. He's present in the darkness with you.
You don't have to find your way out alone. You don't have to have clarity or answers or hope you can feel.

He's got this. Even when you don't.
Especially when you don't.

If you're in darkness today, I'm praying Psalm 139:12 over you. You are seen. You are known. You are loved.

I've heard these messages my whole life—and I bet you have too. They sound spiritual, but they cause real harm.

So today, let's call them what they are: LIES.

ot punishing you. You are not possessed. You need compassionate care, not an exorcism.

These myths keep people suffering in silence. They keep people from getting help. They cause shame where there should be compassion.

So let me be clear:
Your mental health struggles are not a spiritual failure. You are not less faithful because you're struggling. God loves you exactly as you are right now. Getting help is an act of courage and wisdom.

And can we just pause here? Because this is where Advent gets HARD for those of us struggling with mental health.

Everyone's talking about joy, and you're just trying to survive. Everyone's celebrating, and you're fighting back tears. Everyone seems so happy, and you're wondering what's wrong with you.

So let's talk about something important:
Joy ≠ Happiness

Happiness depends on circumstances. Joy is deeper than that.
Happiness says, 'Everything is great!' Joy says, 'It's not great, but I'm still held.'
Happiness requires feeling good. Joy can coexist with depression, anxiety, and grief.

The Bible talks about joy a LOT—but not the kind of joy that requires us to pretend we're fine. Not the kind that denies reality. Not toxic positivity dressed in spiritual language.

Biblical joy is this:
The confidence that God is present even in suffering. The deep knowledge that this isn't the end of the story. The mysterious ability to have grief and hope at the same time. The strength to keep going even when you can't feel anything.
'The joy of the Lord is your strength.' (Nehemiah 8:10)

Not YOUR joy. HIS joy. His strength. His sustaining presence.

You don't have to generate joy on your own. You don't have to fake it. You don't have to perform happiness for others.

You can be exactly where you are—depressed, anxious, struggling, exhausted—and God's joy can still be your strength.

Not because you feel joyful. But because HE is faithful.
If you're not feeling joyful today, that's okay. You're still held. You're still loved. You're still enough.

We're two weeks into Advent. Two weeks of lighting

We're two weeks into Advent. Two weeks of lighting candles and talking about hope and peace.

But if I'm being honest, some days those words feel distant. Some days, hope feels like wishful thinking, and peace feels impossible.

And I think that's okay.

Because Advent isn't about having it all together. Advent is about WAITING. About sitting in the tension between 'not yet' and 'one day.' About holding onto hope even when you can't see the end.

The Israelites waited generations for the Messiah. Mary waited nine months. The disciples waited three days. Waiting has always been part of the story.

So if you're in a season of waiting right now... Waiting for healing. Waiting for breakthrough. Waiting for relief. Waiting for hope to feel real again.
You're in good company.

I see you.

I see you trying to make the holidays magical for your kids while your own mental health is struggling.

I see you managing meltdowns and behaviors and wondering if you're completely failing at this parenting thing.

I see you navigating complicated family dynamics while trying to protect your children from the same hurts you experienced.

I see you exhausted, overwhelmed, and questioning every decision you make.
I see you loving your kids fiercely while also feeling like you're not enough.
Here's what I want you to know:

You are not failing. You're surviving an incredibly challenging season while still showing up for your kids. That's not failure—that's heroic.

There was a season in my life when I wasn't sure I'd make it. When the darkness was so heavy I couldn't see a way through. When hope felt like a cruel joke and I was just going through the motions, barely holding on.

I remember sitting in that darkness, wondering if God had forgotten me. If I'd done something to deserve this pain. If I'd ever feel normal again.

I couldn't have imagined then that I'd be here now—not because everything is perfect (it's not), but because I've learned something profound:

Hope isn't about everything getting better. Hope is about discovering you're stronger than you knew. Hope is about finding God in places you never expected. Hope is about community when isolation tried to win. Hope is about taking one more step even when you can't see the path.

I still have hard days. I still struggle. I still need therapy, support, and grace. But I'm here. And that matters.

If you're in that dark place right now—the one I remember so well—I need you to know:

This is not your forever. You are not alone. You are not too broken. Hope is still possible, even when you can't feel it yet.

Sometimes hope is simply this: I made it through today. I'm still here. That's enough.

You're enough. Right now, exactly as you are, you're enough.

• On edge around family gatherings
• Hypervigilant at parties or events
• Emotionally flooded by seemingly small things
• Disconnected or numb when everyone else seems joyful
• Triggered by certain songs, smells, or traditions

This isn't in your head. This is your nervous system doing its job—trying to protect you based on past experiences.

Here's what you need to know:
1. TRAUMA RESPONSES ARE NOT CHARACTER FLAWS
Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget. Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses are survival mechanisms, not failures.

2. TRIGGERS DON'T MEAN YOU'RE NOT HEALING
Healing isn't linear. Having a triggered response doesn't erase your progress.

3. YOU CAN HONOR BOTH FAITH AND TRAUMA
God is not asking you to pretend you're fine. He's not asking you to 'just forgive and forget.' He's inviting you to bring your whole self—including your trauma—to Him.

4. BOUNDARIES ARE SPIRITUAL SELF-CARE
Saying no to harmful people or situations isn't unforgiving. It's wise. It's healthy. It's loving yourself the way God loves you.

5. PROFESSIONAL HELP IS A GIFT
Trauma therapy (especially EMDR, somatic therapy, or trauma-focused CBT) can change your life. Seeking help is an act of courage and faith.

If you're struggling this season, please know: You're not too broken. You're not making it up. You're not weak. You're surviving—and that takes incredible strength.
Be gentle with yourself. You're doing better than you think. 💜

Week 2 of Advent: PEACE.

But how do we talk about peace when anxiety is stealing our breath? When our minds won't quiet? When peace feels impossible?

I used to think peace meant the absence of struggle. That if I just prayed harder, had more faith, or tried harder to 'let go and let God,' I'd finally feel peaceful.
But here's what I've learned:

Peace isn't the absence of the storm. Peace is God's presence IN the storm.
Peace isn't feeling calm all the time. Peace is knowing you're held even in the anxiety.
Peace isn't having all the answers. Peace is trusting the One who does.
If you're struggling with anxiety this season, here are some things I want you to know:

Your anxiety doesn't disqualify you from God's peace. Taking medication for anxiety isn't a lack of faith—it's taking care of the body God gave you. Therapy is a gift, not a failure. It's okay to use coping tools AND pray. God is not disappointed in you for struggling.

'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.' — John 14:27

Jesus offers a different kind of peace. Not the absence of trouble, but His presence in it.

You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep breathing. The Prince of Peace is with you.

Sunday reminder: Rest is not a reward for productivity. Rest is a requirement for being human.

I know the holidays make this feel impossible. There's so much to do—shopping, decorating, planning, attending events, managing family dynamics. The to-do list never ends.

But here's what I'm learning (and re-learning every season):

Rest is an act of resistance against a culture that tells us our worth is measured by our output.

Rest is an act of faith that trusts God to hold the world together while we step back.

Rest is an act of self-compassion that acknowledges we are not machines.
You don't have to earn rest. You don't have to finish everything first. You don't have to justify it.

God rested. Jesus rested. You can too.

So today—or this week—what's one way you can practice rest? Maybe it's saying no to something. Maybe it's taking a nap. Maybe it's just sitting in silence for five minutes.

Whatever it is, you have permission.

Hard because of complicated family dynamics. Hard because of financial stress. Hard because of grief and loss. Hard because everyone else seems joyful and you're just trying to hold it together. Hard because the darkness of winter matches the darkness you feel inside.

If you're struggling right now, I need you to know something:
You are not broken. You are not a Grinch. You are not failing at the holidays. You're human.

It's okay to not be 'merry and bright' all the time. It's okay to set boundaries. It's okay to take care of yourself even when it disappoints others. It's okay to acknowledge that this season is complicated.

Your mental health matters more than performing holiday cheer.

Hope isn't pretending everything is fine. Hope isn't toxic positivity or forced gratitude. Hope isn't a feeling we manufacture on demand.

Hope is believing that this darkness isn't the end of your story. Hope is taking one more breath when you don't think you can. Hope is showing up for yourself even when it's hard. Hope is trusting that God is present even when you can't feel Him.

This Advent, I'm holding space for those of you who are struggling. You don't have to have it all together. You don't have to be 'merry and bright.' You can be exactly where you are—and hope can still find you there.
